The forum upgrade is now in place, I'll soon update this with a list of some of the differences over the previous forum.

Also, if anyone encounters any problems with the forum, please let me know (either by posting below, by sending me a PM, or by using the site Contact Form )

Changes:

  • General
    • New Signup and login process (in preparation for larger updates to the site)
  • Forum
    • improved/streamlined layout
    • runs quicker
    • nice HTML editor for posting
      • Spell Checker in HTML editor
      • Edit in WYSIWYG or in HTML
      • BBcode tool bar helpers
    • larger avatar size allowed (now 150x150)
      • note: this is managed better by the forum, so images that are larger than this size will be scaled by the forum, not the browser. This means animated avatars that are larger than the size limit will not animate when viewed.
      • New avatar selections will be coming soon.
    • Some BBcode tags available in HTML (if using, remove the space after the first '[')
      • [ spoiler] Spoiler information here [/spoiler]
      • [ code] Code to show in fixed format[/code]
      • [ code=lang] lang should be the code language, this will colour format your code [/code]
      • [ youtube]YouTube video URL goes here[/youtube]
      • [ quote]text to be shown as a quote[/quote]
      • [ quote=someone]this quote will show the name of the person being quoted[/quote]
      • [ flash width:height]Location of Flash file you want to show[/flash
      • [ embed]Put the embed code here[/embed]
      • [ url=Put URL link here]description/title or URL[/URL]
      • [ img]location of image[/url]

Notes:

  • Forum posts, users accounts and PMs have been migrated to the new forum
  • signatures have not been migrated over

Known Bugs:
  • None just now

Applied some updates tonight:
  • Quick Reply box now visible by default
  • For logged in members, the 'Active Topics' link will now indicate how many active topics there are since your last visit
  • A potential fix for the 'Remember Me' problem, will see how that goes.
  • a few styling tweaks
  • Added few avatar sets to the selection available (when logged in, go here)
  • Fixed a visitor counting bug that always reported on 1 guest on the site at any time, all guests will now show correctly.
  • Added the [ Spoiler ] tag back in to the forum
Spoiler: (highlight area to read)
This is an example of the spoiler tag.<br>
Note: it only works with text, images will still show!

Made another update with a few tweaks.  Main addition is the BBcode for adding Youtube videos to your posts.

To add a Youtube video, just put the video URL between the tags [ youtube] and [/youtube] as follows:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_15G_tIl38

Code:
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_15G_tIl38[/youtube]

A few tweaks to the forum, two main items are:

  • Update of the youtube tag to support regional versions of Youtube
  • Quick Post changed to use the HTML editor (resolves conflict between the old BBCode Quick Editor and the HTML format of the HTML editor)

Any chance you could take out the right click on the html editor? It messes with my spell check :(

I'm not sure I can disable it (I'll have  to have a look see)

However, there is a spell check option available (first icon) that works pretty well (though I appreciate it's not as instinctive as right clicking!)

Heh, also in firefox it tells me to press ctrl + c, so it all seems a bit "FFS".

New update applied to the forum
  • Right click context menu disabled on the editor (so you can now use your browsers own spell checker )
  • FLASH code tag added (example below)
  • EMBED code tag added (example below)
  • URL and IMG code tags changed to work in HTML mode

Flash example

Use the flash tag, specifying the width and height required along with the URL location of the Flash file to load:

Code:
[flash 600:400]http://files.swoj.co.uk/file/myside.swf[/flash]

Embed example

With so many websites out there that allow you to embed their content in other places, rather than trying to add separate tags for each of them, I've created one tag to handle as many of them as possible.  Just put the 'embed code' provided by the source website (for example, YouTube, Metacafe, Dailymotion) in side the embed code tags.

Code:
[embed]<embed
src="http://www.metacafe.com/fplayer/699735/dancing_fiat_uno_transformer_redux.swf"
width="400" height="345" wmode="transparent"
pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"
type="application/x-shockwave-flash">
</embed><br><font size = 1><a
href="http://www.metacafe.com/watch/699735/dancing_fiat_uno_transformer_redux/">Dancing
Fiat Uno Transformer - REDUX</a> - <a
href="http://www.metacafe.com/">Watch a funny movie
here</a></font>[/embed]

URL and IMG example

Allows for dropping in code provided by the likes of ImageShack, Photobucket or similar places

Code:
[URL=http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=optprime1cg1.jpg][IMG]http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/7346/optprime1cg1.jpg[/IMG][/URL]

I've made an update to the editor to provide dialog helpers for the various BBcode tags that are commonly used.  When selecting these options you will be prompted for the necessary information for the tag and then the tag will be added.

This includes:

- URL adding

- YouTube video embedding

- Add an image

Use the 'BBcode' drop down to select any of the other tags that you want to use.

Cool, have you thought about supporting some of the other video sites also?

too many to support each specifically, but the Embed tag should support all of them in a more generic way
