i went ahead and decided to post a topic about this discovery channel show as well when i mentioned it in the It Takes a Thief topic. this show is hosted by Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman. together, they have about 30 years experience in special effects, working on such movies as Star Wars (episodes 1 - 3) and the Matrix. what they do is test well-known myths to see whether or not they are true. usually there's at least one large explosion per episode and they go all out in the process of "busting" these myths. some of the ones they've proved are not true...

The brace position on airliners is not actually meant to kill you. (it was a conspiracy that said the purpose of the brace position is meant to kill you because it's cheaper for the airline companies to settle in wrongful death cases than long-term rehabilitation)

and many others. for those that are able to watch it, i highly recommend it

yeah I watch this ocassionally... pretty interesting stuff... I particularly liked when they tried to recreate the scene from jaws, by putting an air cylinder in a sharks jaws and shooting it to see if it would explode. Nope. But it did make it shoot away really fast.

yeah, that was a good one. i also liked how they wanted to make it blow up anyway, so they slapped some C4 onto an air cylinder

they also had this 2 hour special where they did myths about stuff you'd see in the movies...swords cutting through swords, Indian Jones falling through the awnings, etc.

you know that famous scene in raiders of the loat ark where seik or something does this elaborate sword showy to intimidate indiana jones and he just shoots him? there was actually an elaborate sword scene planned but harrison ford had diarhea and couldn't do a lot of physical stuff. i thought that was funny.
anyways, i love that show. they did this one that showed you what would happen if you microwaved a jawbreaker and apparently the inside is like molten lava. don't do that!

i love microwaves. they keep life interesting.
i saw this one about how people think if they put that back part of a pickup truck down it gives them less air resistance and they proved that it actually drags the truck down and makes it slower when you do that.
now whenever i see a guy with that thing down i think "what a MORON"! but i hate it when they do that anyways cuz its dangerous.
idiots.

indeed

did you see the episode where they tested the myth that daddy long legs spiders are the most poisonous but their teeth are just too small to penetrate skin?

I didn't see that but I am curious because I have heard that myth alot, so what was the outcome? Are daddy long legs the most poisonous? I think that's bogus.

Yeah well when you compare Daddy Long Legs with other more horrible, frightening, spiny looking spiders, it seems like it makes sense, as nature usually makes the most poisonous critters the most vibrant and frightening.

yeah but then you get cases like the monarch butterfly versus that one butterfly thats a total poser. it looks tough (cuz iguess the monarch tastes like ****) but its got nothing to back it up.

Yes... having specific amounts of time per day to think of specific flying insects is very sane...
