Came across this article that scientists have established a common definition for what constitutes a planet, which means that the number of planets will be increasing from the current 9 to the new 12.

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2006/08/16/planets_spa.html?category=space&guid=20060816080000

The list of planets in our solar system will be:
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Ceres
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto
Charon
2003 UB313 (provisional name, also known as Xena)

Oh yeah, I saw that on NR (Newsround). These new plants have not just been discovered...we changed our defination of a planet.

See below my copying and pasting!

You would think they would change 'Uranus' name mind :P

Ceres used to be a planet, but was downgraded a long time ago.

'Xena' is the only really new discovery, it was also the one that raised the debate over what a planet actually is

they're thinking of removing pluto's planet status.

However, some of the new 'planets' they have actually seen through telescope's, but beleive they are there due to the way the other planets, stars and the such move around the area, calculating that there is a gravitational force there constituting a planet.

Not sure what difference it makes to anything that we now have 12? Just means some companies are going to make millions in printing maps of the system for schools.

yay.
and there has been debate over pluto since forever.
i don't care how many planets are swinging around me as long as this one tries not to DIE.

You mean earth right? I hear in like 3000 years some other galaxy is going to join ours (Andromeda I think)...Hopefully by then we will have found a way to travel in space.

I wonder how astrologists are going to deal with this. they make big money on predicting fortunes based on the 9 planets, so how do they deal with 12? Are they going to say only the 9 that were decided on in the 20th century are important, or will they build in the new planets (thus implying that their predictions were inaccurate with only 9 previously).

I think we should try and covert mars's Carbon Dioxide into oxygen and nitrogen. If we send robots to do our work now, we should be able have a base on mars by 2018 (When the Mission to mars to planned to be -I think, TV may have lied-)

in another change of direction, seems that there will now be a extra clause added to the definition of a planet which would mean that we would actually be reduced down to 8 planets

http://www.newscientistspace.com/article.ns?id=dn9818&feedId=online-news_rss20

The key point being that the object has to be the dominant body in it's orbital area, so as Pluto crosses Neptunes orbit, that would eliminat Pluto as a planet. Not sure what that eliminates Ceres, maybe it is too close to Mars?

I think we will just have to wait and see...I really have no idea what these people of science will decide. Personally i think they will end up keeping it as 9 and save trees.

i think there will always be debates on the planets no matter how many rocks are floating around us. and i think andromeda is going to join us a lot later than 3000 years from now. i remember learning about that last semester. but we'll all be dead long before that, needless to say.
and my chi is out of balance due to UB313's proximity to neptune's aura.
hmm...no.

yeah that's called dying.
but i want to be frozen like on futurama and then be brought back way farther into the future cuz its kinda boring right now. i mean, crap is happening and all that but i'd rather see what kind of new stuff is invented and discovered and...stuff.

No no, I hear they tested it with these like animals and it worked ok. Tree Frogs do it over the winter, when they get cold they replace there blood with there stuff (We do it to our guys) then they freeze (We kick ours in a freezer) and when there left out in the sun, the blood comes back.

hmmm but their bodies are made for that. i don't know. if they can figure it out before i get all wrinkly then i definitely want in that program. there are these idiots here that have their bodies frozen after they die so that some day they can be brought back to life or something and i'm like...i don't think it works that way people...no. lol man. anyways i think death just weeds out the morons, why would i want them to be brought back later?
anyways i just want to live in a time where i can go to the moon thats all. commercial flights to the moon!!
