According to me, the best sport there is.
What's your opinion on it?

I do weaponry (kobudo-kai) and find it facinating. For those who want to know, we are taught the art of using a Bo (6ft/72" wooden staff) and a weapon of choice - mine being Sai (twin pitch fork like daggers - I'll post a picture of my sai when I can get round to stealing the camera XD)

So, does anyone else do any form of Martial Art?

I have been doing Kung Fu for over 15 years now, been teaching for more than 10 of them.
Primarly I do Lau Gar, however I have also covered a fair bit of Hung Gar and some Shaolin

My organisations website is at http://www.scotlandlaugar.co.uk - needing an update though.
I've been over to the states a few times to train with Master Wing Lam (http://www.wle.com), who we are affiliated with, this is where we learned our Hung Gar and Shaolin style, the guy is amazing!

Have covered a variety of weapons, main ones being Chinese Broad sword, Tai Chi straight sword, short staff (eye-brow height staff) and the Lau Gar long staff (around 8ft in length). Learning the Butteryfly swords now, they are quite interesting

I manage the Kung Fu website (though I need to find time for an overhaul soon), so wondered what I could have spelt wrong! For a minute I wondered if you thought I had the name Steviepunk on my birth certificate or something!

I'm did not have it that bad LOL, I though your name was just Stevie because i've never actally known you to be called Steven (I've only saw your name as Stevie).

Anyway, I enjoy Martial Arts films though I've never really have the time to learn, that and I live nowhere near a 'dojo'...I just go down my local 'Gym'.

there are a great many martial arts, each of which has it's own particular styles and philosophies.

All chinese martial arts are 'Kung Fu', with Kung Fu meaning 'Work done' (or words to that effect). There are many different styles with in Kung Fu. As an example:
Shaolin - many moves based on circular motion and speed, few 'fixed' stances as the style is designed for use in mountainous regions where flat ground is rare, this is why there is a lot of jumping and movement
Hung Gar - Originated in south of China where it is very flat, low and solid stances, few kicks. Developed to maintain maximum strength and power through strong stances, making use of the flat terrain. Low stances also help with balance on boats.
Tai Chi - based on natural movement and body posture. Strength comes from exact positioning of the body in relation to an opponent and the natural resistance of the body. The concept of Chi (your body energy) is used with the projection and movement of your energy in your movements. Hard to explain well, but very effective.

I don't know as much about martial arts from other areas, however as a generality, Karate and Kendo are form Japan, Tai Kwon Do is Korean, Mu Tai (sp?) is from Thailand, Caporiea is Brazilian. As I don't do these particular styles, I don't want to incorrectly say what the ideology behind each is.

Obviously there are many others, I just can't think of them just now.
