Has anyone noticed that on amazon.com spore as only got 1 star and most the reviews seems to be quite annoyed at the DRM used?

yeah, had heard about that.
I'm no fan of harsh DRM systems, it's only the pirate that doesn't have to put up with it! I won't be buying it (or pirating it). DRM with this level of draconian control will only go away if people stop buying it and spend their money on games from companies that don't treat their customers like criminals.
The UK Amazon site doesn't seem to have the same flood of bad reviews (it has hardly any), but the US site is quite astounding, even Rock Band didn't get this level of destain with all the reviews over it's terrible UK pricing.

I'm not going to buy it also, mainly because the game does not appeal to me and that the DRM is a cunt. I kinda think that things like this (Not the DRM idea, but the aggressiveness of the DRM) will almost force people to pirates just to have a PC that does not leak info (I know some pirates come with crap, but some are ok).

With some of the DRM scandals that have occured in the last couple of years, I'm very wary of any game I'm buying now, with rootkits and intrusive driver installations that can leave your PC borked, it's more hassle than it's worth.
For a while now, most of the PC games that I've got have been on or through Steam, or Stardock Central (now called/replaced by Impulse). The only exceptions that have been Unreal Tournament 3 (which is now available Steam and Stardock Central anyway), Surpeme Commander (whose developers are now partnering with Stardock and produced the Gamers Bill or Rights), The Club and UFO Trilogy.
Although they blame piracy for PC game sale decline, intrusive DRM is probably a bigger factor.
I have been tempted to get Bioshock now that the activation limit has been removed, but I'm not totally sure yet. However, games like Spore, Red Alert 3 and probably anything by EA now (which may include Rage :( ) will be off the agenda due to their insistance on restrictive and obstructive DRM. Why they can't take a few leasons from Steam I don't know..

I totally agree with you :)
I think DRM is mostly targeting less technological (The people who never format) people who don't understand the issues regarding it. Though I think their loss of sales is because their games are shit, for example a recent game I purchased was not compatible enough to run on a AMD Phenom 9550 64 bit. When I wacked on compatablity mode the game's story/gameplay was dissopointing.

not sure about the game quality arguement. Granted, there are a lot of rubbish games, but even the good ones are not selling as well as they should do - Crysis and UT3 come to mind as being high profile examples, while The Movies and Black and White 2 are up there as well.

I think Crysis is more of a compatibility thing, that game needs some kinda god machine to run it.
