It is supposed to tell you a bit about the site. Like, .com would be for commercial sites, and .net would be for networks. Thats why we have .gov extentsions that are used for government sites and .org ones used for organizations. .com sites have to make a profit from their site - like the site has to be for a business etc In reality, some cost less than others to buy. you are pretty much correct. Domains are defined by their Top Level, most Top Levels are regional such as .uk, .tk, .us and so on (country domain extentions are all 2 characters), then there are the Global Top Level domains which are .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz and so on. Initially .com was intended for commercial, .org for non-profit organisations and .net for service providers. Due to general lack of knowledge about these things, people tend to regard .com as the only 'proper' domain type and don't think to try .net or .org. Each regional domain extention is controlled by a regional organisation, for .uk that is Nominet. Each region organisation is free to control the domain structure with in their domain extention as they see fit. The UK follows the global example with .co.uk, .org.uk and .net.uk, Australia do it in a similar way with .com.au. Then you get the likes of TK domains, they have made them available to anyone that wants to register and thus have made a profitable business out of them. EAch regional area can set whatever fees and restrictions they want on their domains, for example, .com.au requires that you are a registered Australian company, similar restrictions are in place in the UK for .ltd.uk and .plc.uk, then you have .net.uk which is exclusive to service providers.
Regional domains should not be confused with the likes of .uk.com - this is owned by a comercial company that bought that domain and subsequently started selling sub-domains based on that
Other aspects to consider when thinking about domain prices is what else the company you buy them from does. Some 'lease' you the domain but will not let you transfer it to someone else, at the same time they put their own advertising on your website, or you pay them for ad-free site. Others will let you transfer the domain away but will charge a very large adminitration fee to do so. Always read the terms and conditions.
Hope that helps.

I think that the "proper" domains or most used are .net .com .org but I agree with stevie but I guess it is easiest to remember .com because everyone uses it

The domain ending is irrelavent, the content is what should draw the attention of external viewers. ;)
