in the first Half-Life game, you play as Gordon Freeman who is a scientist at the Black Mesa Research Facility. during the course of a routine experiment, something goes wrong and suddenly beings from another planet come pouring into the facility. it's your job to find help and stop this invasion before it gets out of hand. to make matters worse, a military force is brought in to detain all the workers of the facility. the game is played entirely from the first person perspective. there are no cutscenes, and Dr. Freeman never speaks. it's a great way to tell the story because it places you right in the shoes of Gordon and the story unfolds in front of you, adding a sense of realism and making you feel as though you are there. in the end, Gordon is taken on a strange sort of journey that seems almost like a dream. a man in a suit and carrying a briefcase talks to him about a contract. he gives you the choice of accepting or facing a battle you cant possibly win.

Half-Life 2 picks up where the first left off...only about approximently ten years later. the same man speaks to you and you find yourself waking on a train. as it turns out, the invasion got very out of hand. however, the details are very sketchy just like the first game so it's very ambiguous what exactly has happened. you learn as you go along, once again giving the sense youre actually there. it seems there are certain cities that are safe, controlled by what's known as the Combine. in this game you fight alongside allies from Black Mesa as well as new characters.

that clear things up?
